Video Summary
The webinar introduced PTI’s July session on durable concrete parking structures and their evolution over the past 60 years. Moderator Kyle Boyd reviewed webinar logistics, sponsorship by Post Tech Manufacturing, PTI membership benefits, continuing education credit, copyright rules, and Q&A procedures before introducing speaker Tim Crystal, PTI’s Executive Vice President.

Crystal presented a history of post-tensioned parking structures, explaining how systems evolved from early button-headed wire tendons and solid bars to strand-and-wedge systems, then to today’s extruded, encapsulated monostrand tendons. He emphasized that modern elevated parking structures now require encapsulated PT under current code, a major durability improvement over older “standard” systems. He also reviewed the evolution of material specifications, including PTI M10.2 and ACI 423.7.

The talk covered common structural framing options in parking garages, such as one-way beam-and-slab systems, wide shallow beams, slab bands, and two-way flat plate systems. Crystal explained how these approaches improved span lengths, efficiency, parking layout, and construction economy.

A major theme was durability design. He highlighted ACI 362 resources, especially the guide for durable parking structures, which addresses climate exposure zones, concrete strength, drainage, cover, and crack control. He also discussed volume-change effects, restraint-to-shortening design, and the importance of maintenance guidance.

Finally, Crystal stressed PTI certification’s role in quality assurance, noting the importance of certified plants, certified personnel, and proper construction practices. He closed by pointing viewers to PTI educational resources and future webinars on design, documentation, construction, and parking-structure topics.
